GLA:D Back Program
A modern approach to managing persistent or recurrent low back pain.

At Complete Physio Richmond, we have seen incredible success running the GLA:D® program for hip and knee osteoarthritis. We are now proud to introduce GLA:D® Back – a structured treatment program designed to help you manage back pain, reduce fear of movement, and get back to the activities you love.
GLA:D Back is a revolutionary, evidence-based treatment option for patients with long-term or recurrent low back pain that affects everyday life. The program combines both education and exercise to improve self management skills in patients with back pain.

Who is GLA:D Back for?
- GLA:D® Back is designed for patients with persistent and/or recurrent back pain that negatively affects their everyday life and function.
- You do not need a specific diagnosis on a scan to participate. In fact, the program is designed to help those who have tried other treatments without long-term success.
- Your physiotherapist will conduct a clinical assessment to ensure the program is right for you.
What is GLA:D Back?
- GLA:D® (Good Life with osteoArthritis in Denmark) was originally developed for knee and hip pain. Building on that success, researchers at the University of Southern Denmark developed GLA:D® Back specifically for people suffering from persistent or recurrent low back pain that affects everyday life.
- It is not a “quick fix” or a passive treatment.
- It is a comprehensive education and exercise program designed to give you the tools to manage your back pain independently for the long term.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between GLA:D® Back and the traditional GLA:D® Knee/Hip program?
While both programs share the same philosophy (Education + Exercise + Data), the content is very different.
- GLA:D® Knee/Hip is specifically targeted at Osteoarthritis biomarkers and mechanics.
- GLA:D® Back focuses heavily on behavioural changes, movement confidence and the nervous system’s role in pain.
Even if you have done GLA:D® for your knees, you must complete the specific education sessions for the Back program as the learning material is distinct.
Is GLA:D® Back only for people with Arthritis?
No. The name “GLA:D” (Good Life with osteoArthritis in Denmark) comes from the original knee/hip program. However, GLA:D® Back is not limited to arthritis. It is beneficial for a wide range of non-specific low back pain conditions.
Is it "One Size Fits All"?
Definitely not. While the structure is consistent, the exercises are adapted to your current capacity. Patients with long-term back pain are a diverse group – and we scale the program to meet your individual needs and goals.
Is GLA:D® Back better than other treatments?
There are many treatment options for back pain, but GLA:D® Back is unique because it is one of the best-described and most thoroughly researched programs available. It moves away from passive treatment (massage, manipulation) and empowers you to control your own pain. It is recommended as a first line intervention in international guidelines.
Do I need a scan (MRI/X-Ray) before joining?
Generally, no. One of the key educational components of the program is understanding that scan results often do not correlate well with pain levels. Unless your physiotherapist suspects a specific pathology requiring medical investigation, a scan is not required to start.
Will the exercises make my pain worse?
It is normal to feel some awareness of your back when starting new movements, especially if you have been protecting it for a long time. However, the program is supervised by trained professionals who ensure you are moving safely. The goal is to gradually expose your back to load so it becomes stronger, not more painful.
Who runs the program?
The program is run by our expert physiotherapists who have completed the specific GLA:D® Back certification.
